Our costly pizza restaurant story

Even though the prices on the menu were exorbitant, we believed that our family of five would easily be able to be fed by ordering two pizzas for adults and two pizzas for children.

Sadly, it was not even close to being enough… It’s not that we have a voracious appetite; it’s just that the portions were a lot bigger than we were expecting. so  small. After we had finished devouring everything, it should not have come as a surprise to see that everyone was still hungry.

After doing some quick math in my head to figure out where we stood in terms of expenditure, I came to the conclusion that placing another order for pies was not an option.

My expectations were not met by any part of the event. I could have purchased the necessary ingredients to create more than 30 pizzas at home if I had spent that amount of money… Indeed, you did read that correctly. I could have easily fed my family well over thirty delectable and nutritious handmade pizzas with the $90 that I had available.

This recipe yields two pizza crusts measuring 12 inches. Additionally, we will utilize a few other items as toppers. All the stated ingredients are readily available at strong>Walmart/strong> and may be purchased online or in-store.

Flour – My research revealed that a 25-pound bag of Great Value All Purpose Flour could be had for $7.76, or around $.02 per ounce. The 11 ounces of flour called for in the recipe costs $0.22.

Yeast – Flakes or jars of Fleischmann’s Yeast can be purchased online. Even though the jar would be cheaper, I opted for the packets due to their portability. The current price for a pack of three is $1.34 at the time of this writing. We just need one package for our recipe, therefore the total cost is only $.44.

Olive Oil –The cost of Pompeian OlivExtra Premium Mediterranean Blend is $4.68 for a bottle of 24 ounces. Our recipe calls for 2 tablespoons, or.97 of an ounce, thus the cost is $0.19.

Sugar – One dollar ninety-eight cents, or half a dollar per pound, is the price of a four pound bag of sugar. Half a teaspoon is called for in the recipe, and because there are 174 teaspoons in a pound, we get $.003 — or, uh, nothing. Let’s round up to a penny.

Salt – A 26-ounce package of salt costs $.54, or $.03 per ounce. I won’t bother you with the arithmetic again, but suffice it to say that the one teaspoon we need for our recipe will cost very close to $.0, so we’ll simply say $.01.

Let’s add some basic toppings and see where the calculations come out:

Sauce – Walmart presently sells one jar of Great Value Pizza Sauce for $1.58, making the price per ounce $.07. For one pizza, we’ll need roughly 4 ounces of sauce, which will set us back about $0.28.

Cheese – At the moment, Walmart is selling 5-pound bags of Great Value Shredded Mozzarella Cheese for $13.97.

FIVE pounds?  That’s a lot of cheese, I get that, but did you know you can freeze cheese? You should read this piece from the National Dairy Council.

To save a lot of money, it’s best to buy the larger bag if your freezer can accommodate it. Cut the cheese into one-cup servings and wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or freezer bags to prevent it from taking on the tastes of other foods in your freezer.

Per ounce, this cheese costs $.18.  We will need 4 oz. for one pizza which will cost $.72.

The cost of energy is the only factor we have not yet included in our handmade pie calculations.

Most people can’t prepare pizza without an electric oven. Energy costs are very variable and depend on a number of factors, including where you live, what you’re trying to cook, and what kind of appliance you’re using (range, toaster oven, wood-fired pizza oven, etc.). Weekends and weeknights often have cheaper electricity rates in our area.

At $.12 per kW hour, it would cost $.30 to operate my oven for one hour if it consumes 2400 watts.

If my oven consumes 1200 watts at $0.10 per kilowatt-hour, the hourly cost would be $0.12.
Because the expenses vary so significantly, I will enter strong>$0.20/strong> for the cost of electricity.


When I initially calculated how much it would cost to make one pizza at home, I have to confess that I was taken aback by the overall amount. I estimated that it would cost somewhere in the range of $4 to $5. On the other hand, the ultimate tally is as follows:

Crust – $.44

Toppings – $1.72

Electricity – $.20

The following three ways to save more money are all ones I have personally implemented in my own life.


You may save even more money by purchasing yeast, wheat, and olive oil in bulk all at the same time.

Yeast is often something I buy in large quantities. The entire jar, with the exception of one cup, is placed in the freezer. The one cup is placed in a jar and stored in the refrigerator.

Yes, yeast can endure frigid temperatures, even those that are as severe as those found in the freezer. It is suggested that you utilize all of your yeast within four months if it has been stored in the refrigerator. Yeast may be kept for up to one year if it is frozen and placed in an airtight container. This topic can lead to a whole other discussion about how it might be beneficial to purchase a small chest freezer for your garage in order to save money (and offer convenience), despite the additional cost of electricity; however, we will save that discussion for a different article because it deserves its own space.

My own experience has shown that yeast may remain viable for considerably longer than even six months. Proofing it allows me to determine whether or not it is still operational… You may find instructions on how to prove the yeast in the recipe that we have provided for Quick Perfect Pizza Dough.

Additionally, the easiest way to preserve the quality of bulk-purchased flour is to store it in the freezer. It is important to properly wrap it so that it does not pick up the flavor of the other dishes. If it is kept in the freezer, it will last for an infinite amount of time.

If it is kept correctly, olive oil may be preserved for up to two years. Keep it out of the sun and out of the heat since those things will hasten the process of disintegration.


Okay, so I’m not advocating that you plant a wheat field in order to produce flour – that would be quite a task. However, a few tomato plants may provide you with enough tomatoes to use as a fresh topping, can some for sauce, and prepare some sun-dried tomatoes, so saving you money.

Basil, what about it? I LOVE basil on my pizza… Without fresh basil, pizza is not pizza in my opinion. I am overjoyed with the mix of fresh tomato sauce, mozzarella, and basil. Basil is also very easy to cultivate. Most garden centers offer basil plants, but growing basil from seeds is more economical.

The same holds true for sweet and spicy peppers, onions, and most other veggies… They are simple to cultivate, save money, and provide gardening delight.
